HEAD SWAP

Pictures and Description of my 2G - 1G Head Swap

I have been driving around with the new head for a while. I went through a couple of heat
cycles and re-torqued the head studs. Looks like the silver ceramic coating is starting to
burn off. I guess 860 C on the highway is little too warm.

I replaced the upper thermostat housing. I moved the temp sensor down to the bottom. I
feel this is better because it put the sensor on the block side of the thermostat.

3 different angle with it basically finished

Another view.

And yet another

Earlier I mentioned that the reason the car would not start was because the Cam Angle
Sensor fitting was off. I found out the cam actually had ground off some of the site
sprockets. Here you can see the old one verses the new one. Look at the sides.

My aluminum MAP block was bleeding the pressure and creating a CEL. Here I am RTVing two
sets of hoses together for a direct connection to the manifold.

Another view. I 'T'ed off the Fuel Pressure Regulator hose.

My thougths on the head swap.
From what I can already tell, it is a definite improvement. I think this was a worth
mod, even though I have to go to the track yet. I am hoping to do this in a couple of
weeks. I am now in the process of tuning the Super AFC for the new setup. I have found
that I have needed to actually set the % even lower in the low to mid range. The head
definitely pulls hard above 5K RPM. I have started to lower the AFC setting to get that
same pull at lower RPM's. At least down to the 3.8K RPM range. (of course the drag RPM's)
I had the head built with the thought that I will not go over 7.2K RPM. I do not want to
put the stock bottom end through that, and especially the tranny.
I have developed a clunk under the center of the car. I think that it is the 3 in. Down
Pipe hitting the transfer case. I will look into it this weekend. I believe this happened
because of the difference in heads which relocated the exhaust slightly.
I found when doing the head swap that it was easy in the beginning. I had checked a few
web sites - like RRE Road Race Engineering
and thought that the swap would be cake. For the most part it was, but there were a lot of
little things that I did not count on. Most of those were related to the smog equipment
I needed to make sure that I labeled all of the hoses. I had to relocate different wires,
and sensors, and make a lot of brackets. I realized that I did not have all of the parts
and had to order some. Next thing I knew, what I planned to take 3 days took 3 weekends,
with the car sitting in the driveway during the week. I have tried to outline the steps
I took with some included pictures. I am sure that are a few things that I have left off
but I probably considered them common sense. If you have any questions regarding the swap
feel free to e-mail me, and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can. Also, when I
figure out what is causing my CEL (EGR Malfunction) I will post the cause.
