The last time at
the track I realized that my passenger side tire was spinning during my launch.
It wasn't until
power transferred to the rear wheels that the car finally launched. I thought I
would
share how to pull
your tranny apart and change the front diff. -Shawn
This
pic is of the tranny on the bench. |
I
have removed the bolts around the tranny and I am prying the outer case
off. |
Watch
out for the gear oil that will pour out the front diff openings |
This
picture shows the top case removed. |

I
also purchased two new front diff bearings. |

You
need to remove the spring clip that holds the VC in. |

Spring

The
VC removed. It should just pull off, but might need a little prying. |
36mm
socket to remove the lock nuts. |
Wedge
a penny in the gears to prevent them from spinning. Don't worry the penny
is a softer metal then the gears and will not hurt them. |
Removing
the nuts. An impact wrench is really nice here. |
Nuts
removed. |
You
will need a center punch to remove the shift arm. |
Keep
your eye on the spring ring and the 3 keepers. Don't lose them. |
The
top gear is pressed in and will need to be pried out. |
Use
a screw driver to get the 5th gear pried up a bit. I used a puller to get
it the rest of the way off. |
5th
gear removed. |
Used
two large screw drivers to get the other gear assembly off. |
To
get the thin middle case off you will need to remove these nuts. |
Another
shot. |
There
are springs in there along with ball bearings. Don't lose these. |

This
star fitting will need to be removed to get the center case off. It is
attached to the reverse. |
Here
is the Quaife Center Diff. I had to tap the output shaft out. It is held
in by a ball bearing. |

Reverse
bolt removed. There is another bolt that needs to be removed on the other
side too. |
Here
is a pic of the middle case removed. |
You
can see the gear assemblies. Good time to start inspecting all the gears
for damage. |

I
had a bad tranny axle seal so I will replace both of them while the tranny
is out. |
Tapping

Pan
full of diffs! |
Don't
lose this rings. They are spacer shims designed to provide the correct
amount of preload. |
I
need to measure the Quaife front diff assembly to compare the size
difference verses stock. Manual allows for .002-.004 variance on Front
diff preload. |
I
am .001 smaller for the Quaife front diff verse stock. I will order a new
shim from the dealer. The factory manual will list the different codes and
sizes. |
